Re: My new Generation Bb brass whistle

I have a feeling I might know what you are talking about but trying to describe what is a blowing sound or relaxing sounds, etc. is going to be a pain here... Using that fingering, if one keeps a constant pressure, there will be a tendancy on some whistles to produce a sort of 'flip' back and forth ...

Re: clogging?

I don't know if others have noticed this but my Feadogs improve their tone a bit as they clog. There's a point where the tone mellows a little and gets less raspy for a minute or so. Then the whistle clogs, I blow or suck it out and the Feadog sounds like it usually does. This doesn't happen all th...

Re: clogging?

I can tell you from personal experience that how likely a whistle is to have condensation issues does indeed have a great deal to do with materials used and the construction of the mouthpiece / fipple. When I first started out, my fipple plugs were made of wood and the fipple themselves of copper. I...

Re: The Clare Jig

Another suggestion I would point out is to make a visit to the 'Clips n Snips' website. There you will find all different levels of playing from beginner to advanced, and a HUGE range of tunes. Just something for your ear, and I would also suggest that you might perhaps go for a jig or reel that is ...

Re: Trouble in second register

Hello there! Without knowing just how new to whistling you are, I am unsure what / what not to ask you here so I will just make a few suggestions that might help out... With any whistle, as you play higher into the second register, it will require a bit more and more air as you go up. Not tons... ju...

Re: Mary's Magical 'A' Gracenote

Ok so here we go. I know my timing is a little off, but for what it is, this should do the trick. http://www.fawkesbay.com/Files/ornamwhat.mp3 This sound clip contains first a clip from Mary's playing, then my own, then myself playing the first half of the B part slower so you can kind of hear some ...

Re: Tin Whistle storage

Greetings, Like Tim said, if you do a search you'll find an amazing aray of great containers for whistles on this forum - home made and commerical options of all kinds. Just a couple of quick ideas to get your mind rolling that I know many people use are: PVC pipe from the hardware store - two end c...

Re: Mary's Magical 'A' Gracenote

Ok I listened to to the clip again - shoot I think that's a recording of her from the very class I took! Cool! :D You may very well be right about the triplet, but I encourage you to try the method I posted - I think if you listen to the clip ... then listen to yourself / a recording of youself ... ...

Re: Mary's Magical 'A' Gracenote

Greetings all, I haven't listened to the clip, but if this is a debate over the embellishment I think it is - and buffpiper has asked me about before - then I actually took the course at the St. Louis Tionol from Mary Bergin and one of the toons she taught us was The Congress... it is an interesting...

This is very interesting and enlightening in fact. To me I always interpreted the 'responsiveness' of a whistle to be how easily my fingers could 'pop' around on the finger-board, and how easily it changed registers up and back down without buzz or squeaks... I guess it really is kind of subjective,...

There is merit in both really. Yes you could save up your money and purchase a high end whistle that will most likely give you the sound you want, with the added benefit of being able to have it serviced / tweaked by the maker if it arrives and you feel it needs it. Yes, I would also agree that C/C#...

well, i have a Walton's little black D for practice as i have unruly downstairs neighbors', a Walton's Mellow D and a Susato Kildare in D. I've only been playing for about a week, so i'm trying to restrain myself. I am a little bit interested in finding a quiet, durable D in case my practice one br...

Greetings from Alabama

Hello everyone, I am back from the ether of cyberspace so to speak. Before anyone gets too excited, at this time I no longer have access to the materials which I used to make my whistles, nor the shop in which I used to make them. I have been relocated to Alabama since my return to my job. I have ma...
