Re: Dixon Trad - Your Experiences?
Okay, I'm a pinhead. I just pitted them end to end again, and if they're different sizes, it's by a few nanometers. I don't know why I had it in my head that the new one was more narrow. I would still ardently claim that it seems to play different than the older one, but by now I've squandered all m...

Re: Dixon Trad - Your Experiences?
Sorry Oak may have been a bad comparison on my part. In my mind's eye, Oak is comparatively small. Sorry if I mislead.
But the new one is definitely smaller than the old one. I'm afraid I don't have a micrometer, but maybe I can bust out the ol' tape measure tonight ...

Re: Dixon Trad - Your Experiences?
Agreed with the newer ones being quieter. I haven't had the chance to measure the diameter of my new one, but the old one appeared to be roughly the same diameter as my Mellow Dog (maybe a bit smaller, but not much). The newer one reminds me of an Oak in terms of its smallness -- though it plays muc...

Re: Dixon Trad - Your Experiences?
Anyone else recently played a newer Dixon trad against an older one? I posted a few months ago about accidentally crushing my "old" trad, which I bought about 1 1/2 years ago. I got a new Dixon trad last week, and it plays quite differently from its ancestor. I noticed the cylinder is much...

Re: I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
see about combining [the Dixon head] with a Generation or Walton. Just keep in mind that the Dixon head is slightly longer and fatter than a Gen type head. It will fit on a 1/2 inch D tube with a little Teflon tape, but will also extend the blade-to-bell length around 12 mm. Which actually gives yo...

Re: I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
My Mellow Dog arrived today, and it's an absolute stunner! It certainly takes the sting out of the loss of my Dixon, which -- despite being bang back into shape -- isn't the whistle it once was. I'll either order another body from Tony or see about combining his cap with a Generation or Walton. Mean...

Re: I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
I sat on a whistle one dark night at a festival and snapped the head right off. Now I never, ever, ever put a whistle down where there is a chance something could happen to it. It's a painful lesson to learn. My thoughts are with you. That would make for a great Halloween story ... "It all beg...

Re: I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
Terrible luck, crushing whistles, a man I know once ran over a Burke whistle in his car! It was never the same again... Best of luck! I initially misread "a man I know once" as "I once" ... I was thinking, "Wow, you ran over a Burke whistle in Michael Burke's car? What were...

Ouch! I'm a big fan of Sweethearts ... that must have been quite a loss. The Whistle Collector wrote:I had the same thing happen with my Sweetheart a few years ago. I crushed it good. I still miss it.

Re: I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
I have partially restored the whistle to its former glory, thanks to a wooden dowel rod and a rubber mallet. Sadly, there are still dent's on both sides of the 5 hole, and the area from the 5 hole to the end of the whistle is still bent a bit. But it's playable and reasonably in tune ... eventually ...

Re: I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
Thanks MTGuru and Ballyshannon for the suggestions. I may try salvaging it, and even if I can, I can certainly recycle the head. I was even toying with trying the head on, say, a Generation ... figured at the very least I'd have a great Frankensteinian whistle for Halloween ... it's ALIVE!!!

Re: I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
Thanks all for the kind words and whistle (or bodily) humor :-) I had hoped to at least turn this into a teachable moment for my 2-year-old daughter. When I told her that I was sad because I had broken my toy, she pointed at one of her toys, smiled confidently and said, "Hazel's toys are good!&...

I'm crushed ... and so is my Dixon trad!
Last night I accidentally crushed (with my knee) my beloved Dixon trad, which I'd had for years and was by far my most heavily played whistle. No one to blame but myself - the whistle was on the bed, and I climbed into bed, with the whistle and my knee both at exactly the right/wrong location. I off...

Re: Tunes for a flute newbie
About the same price 9.99... but you are right. A buck more. That's a fair price, too. For a while, I could find the album's only through CD Baby, and they were asking a fair bit more. Also worth pointing that that there are songbooks available for some of the seisun albums (if you care to learn fr...

Re: Tunes for a flute newbie
If you want to hear an acceptable account of many of the tunes as played at a session you might want to pick up the Foinn Seisiúns. You can find 1-3 on iTunes. You can also buy them for an insanely reasonable price at lala.com. I was able to get volumes 1-3 for about $8-9 per album. Not sure what i...
