Re: Question about open hole Boehm flutes
I play both simple-and Boehm-system flutes pretty much daily, so feel reasonably confident about this opinion :-D ... the holes in "open-hole"/French-style Boehm flutes' keys are not designed for slides; the keys kind of obviate that. The holes exist for tone/resonance/clarity and especial...

Re: Uilleann Pipe Teacher in New Jersey
Jerry O'Sullivan seems to visit that area periodically. Perhaps you could try him for a lesson now and again? He's a grand teacher, and a swell guy. jerry@jerryosullivan.com Also, I suggest you consider the Catskills Irish Arts Week (http://catskillsirishartsweek.com) and the Northeast Tionol (http:...

Re: Bill Ochs RIP
Oh, Peter, that photo made tears spring to my eyes - it's wonderful! Bill was such a friend to all pipers and whistlers (he was a fine flute player, too!); always there with an encouraging word. He gave his life to this music and to sharing it with others - we'd be so much less here in the States wi...

WTB: Used low E, F whistles
Our trio is moving into alternative keys, so I'd like to expand the low/alto whistle arsenal.
I won't use them much, so maker and condition aren't biggies but they do need to be tuneable, please
PM me with details and price. I'm in the U.S. Midwest. Thanks!

Might as well stuff some burr comb in one and see if you can attract some honeybees!
At least you'll have a steady supply of beeswax, and maybe something sweeter

Re: Flute Tone Quality
What Brad said, and so well (of course!) :-) John Gallagher is making some very fine flutes these days. Several classical-crossover friends have bought his small-holed Rudalls, and they sound lovely. Like many of the "newer" flutes, including David Copley's, they seem very rewarding to pla...

The photo reminds me of watching Paddy Keenan make a reed. I thought "Ah, that's what I'm doing wrong ... EVERYTHING!"

I saw Paddy, Frankie, and Junji Shirota in Bloomington, IN about 10-12 years ago. They were breathtaking. Glad to hear they've made a recording - that's one for the collection. Thanks for the info!

Re: Poor acting student, piper in 2 weeks?
How about "the 'walk on while playing' direction means you have the wrong pipes entirely?" Of course, if we disabuse them then they may give the poor kid a week to learn the Highland pipes ... :P I think I was able to squeeze out "Jim Ward's" in about a week and a half, but I pla...

I am so delighted this is happening. And especially delighted to see dear Michael Tubridy in the promo photo, too. What an exceptional human he is. Thank you for letting us know - I hope it's online at some point!

Re: 3 Rowsome D chanters: Koehler VS Nakatsui VS Aebi
Ronan Browne is playing a Nakatsui concert set nowadays. I would recommend looking at his channel on YouTube for the "Ace and Deuce of Pipering" video. Makoto also has some clips and videos of various pipers playing his concert sets on his home page at nakatsuipipes.com; just scroll down a...

Re: microphone placement for pipes
Not that I'm biased or anything, but ... :-) I have had the pleasure hearing your work at a bunch of Northeast Tionol concerts, and I'm always struck by how good everything sounds -- better than most live sound I hear anywhere! Don't know if this is germane to your situ or not, but I recently came a...
