Re: History of the Uilleann Pipe
pancelticpiper has it right. I would add a couple observations. Interest in the uilleann pipes in the US was very much tied in to the waves of immigrants from Ireland. Of any instrument, UP seemed most identified with positive memories of the 'old country.' This was particularly the case from about ...

I have an old paper scan of the image with types A thru E. Semi-legible. I was all set to post it but I see that it is copyright C. I. Bayley. This deters me without his permission.

Re: Left handed UPs
This is a bit off-topic but I have the sense that left-handed players & left-handed pipes were more common about 100 years ago. I've found documentation for about 15 LH pipers active in North America around 1910. And I suspect that most players who are interested in old sets have come across a f...

Re: What is the History of Pakistani Uilleann pipes?
Back in the 1990s I recall hearing that the sets from Pakistan were based on or taken from the look of sets by Kirk Lynch, a pipemaker in Missouri, USA. I dimly recall hearing of Kirk's consternation that these cheap pipes were being confused with his work. Kirk made the cover of An Píobaire Sept 19...

Re: sessions or tunes in Springfield, Illinois?
I did think of busking, but got bashful. Also too hot. Never did find any players. The folks at a local Irish bar gave me a blank stare when I asked.
Yes, there is a whole lot of stuff about Abraham Lincoln in Springfield. Everywhere you turn.

The Piping Underclass - a Lives of the Pipers article
I have written an article about the piping underclass, unsuccessful and unlucky pipers in America, 1860-1920. I put it up recently on my website Lives of the Pipers. Of possible interest.
It was first published in An Píobiare, Jan. 2022.

Re: Found a new old set of pipes (Coyne)---who restores/ makes reed for them
Interesting! Is this the set Standeven and some of his pupils called the "holy set"? So named because of its "antiquity and sweet tonality." I own an old boxwood set once owned by Standeven. I communicated with a few people, former students, etc., trying to find out more of its h...

Thanks for this. The webpage is new to me.
A couple of people were independently doing research on Johnny McGowan. He was the only piper I can think of who lived in Baltimore in the first half of the 20th Century. His Taylor set is now owned by a piper in California.

Mr. G, Thanks for posting the photos of van Dijk and his set. Interesting and helpful. The only other photo of supposed White parts I have seen is of a couple regulators. As I wrote in my entry on White: Another blackwood set has regulators with the original keys thrown away, the pin blocks sawed of...
