Assuming you are using GDAE tuning, my vote as a 19 fret player is: 11, 15, 27, 38-40. Not light but not too heavy. The heavier you go , the more strain on the neck, the heavier the action and the 'thunkier' the sound!

Where's he from, is he from a place where refridgerators are priceless in value? I'm guessing Nepal. A strap around the forehead seems to be the primary method to transport heavy objects. They have special wicker baskets that porters use to lug critical trekking supplies (cola, chocolate etc.) up t...

Steve; Now that I look at the needahotel site, I've stayed at the Mount Herbert in Ballsbridge before and would again. It's an older smaller style hotel about 15 minute walk from the city centre ('though this walk does have the benefit of passing by O'Donoghues bar on Merrion Row  ). At about ...

Steve; City Centre hotels in Dublin don't come Jury's inn (http://www.jurys-dublin-hotels.com/jurysinn_christchurch) across the road from Christchurch Cathedral has relatively reasonably priced accommodation for the city centre. It's big and modern but generally friendly and very clean. Failing that...

the music is not as important to my wife and daughter (although appreciated) as it is to me. Just like my own family - yet to see the light  OK, firstly good move on the decision to restrict yourselves to one country, you'll save yourselves the stress of trying to fit too much in. JFK direct t...

Phil; I'm afraid that the North-west is not my strong point but for what it's worth: Knock airport is your most local international but you can't fly there from Heathrow, just Luton, Stansted or Gatwick (http://www.knockairport.com/). If you're planning your trip for August you will be just a bit la...

Phil; If you're looking at about 8 days in Ireland then I'd say try to base yourself in one area (West or South-west, or North-west). The reason for this is that travelling short distances in the more remote parts of Ireland takes a long time regardless of the mode of transport. From what you say, I...

Mike; You could put in that triplet at the start of the first bar of Morrison's as an ornament. Instead of E_D_E B_A_B| try EEE_E B_A_B|. It's not real pretty but it gets the idea across. A tight grip shouldn't become a tense grip. - Agreed completely. Many start off with the pick held between the t...

I've done a fair bit of experimentation on my 19 fret and settled on .011", .015", .027"(Wound) and either .038"(W) or .040"(W) for EADG (Irish Tuning). A few players I know prefer a lower tension action on the right hand and use about .010" and .013" for E and A. ...

Good to hear things are coming on well using the DUD DUD system Budduh. As I said, everyone has their own system that they will resolutely defend as the best, because it works for them. The same thing applies when it comes to the debate on what fingers should be used on what fret. At the end of the ...

How do you play a triplet at the start of a jig bar? Is it DUD_D D_U_D or DUD_U D_U_D?

Hey Budduh; My experience, for what it's worth, is that if you want to develop quick triplets you will need to tighten your grip on those thin picks. Use picks which are very elastic and snap back quickly (like Dunlop Tortex 0.5mm - the red ones) and not ones that take time to spring back (like the ...
