I feel like such an expert.

Someone gave me some sheet music with a 2/4 tune in G on it. I played through it a bit and though, "oh, it's a hornpipe" from the shape of the melody (it was written in straight sixteenth notes). I felt knowledgeable. But there was also one note I didn't like. I decided to change it, and i...

Re: transposing question

If the original tune has no accidentals in it, then whatever key you transpose it into, it still won't have any accidentals. That is, if your original tune is in G, and only uses the notes in the G scale, G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G, then transposing it to C will only use the notes in the C scale, C-D-E-F-G-A-...

MusicalADD wrote:"Midnight on the Water" always sounded more Appalachian than Irish to me, but, I've only ever heard it played at Irish sessions.
I've heard it was written by Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson (or his father Luke).

Sounds nice.

I don't know these folks, but they sound pretty good. The "Bird in the Bush" track is pretty amusing.

Re: Good whistles with low volume?

You can always use a mute. I usually use electrical tape, like this. The width of the tape controls how much muting you get.

From http://www.MartinNolan.com:
"Martin plays Andreas Rogge uilleann pipes, Cillian O’Briain low whistles, and Syn whistles"
I recall him saying his drones had brass reeds.

Re: Paddy Keenan house concert

I'm just visiting for a few days, and happened to hear about this concert at the last minute. It was amazing to hear Mr. Keenan completely unamplified in such a small space. What fun to hear him playing around with the Harvest Home hornpipe, throwing in a torrent of triplets, and ending with "s...

Re: Irish Washerwoman

A friend was in Galway years ago and asked to start a set. She played the Sligo Maid, and got teased for starting "that Sligo tune." But no one was turning their noses up, of course, just taking the mickey. I wonder how often good-natured slagging is misunderstood. I was chatting to a cou...

I presume you mean "did NOT change at all"?

Nice recordings, breezy with a fun loping bounce. Yeah, it sounds a bit bright, but I like the balance and separation.
