Possibly WTB: Seery flute

Dear friends,

A friend of mine is looking to purchase a Des Seery delrin flute. Would anyone be interested in selling one for around $300?

Yours,

Last Night's Fun location map

This is fun -- you can see all of the locations (or many of them anyway) that are talked about in Carson's book.

Flute advice from John Creaven

I just came across this advice on an old tape of a flute lesson with John Creaven. It's something we all know of course, but it is useful to be reminded from time to time. “Listening to good music is half the battle. If you can’t play, if you don’t have the time to play, if you can put music on when...

Kevin Henry & Michael Flatley, together again

I thought this might be of interest. I was emailed this by Pat Cloonan and thought people might like to see it. I am not sure what exactly the context of the photo was, something at Gaelic Park in Chicago. http://nd.edu/~psmith13/frankkevinflatley.jpg Frank Burke, Kevin Henry, Michael Flatley, Brend...

I visited the exhibit on the pipes at Collins Barracks when I was in Dublin a few weeks ago. I got the impression that most or at least several of the sets on display were on temporary loan from actual pipers, I can't remember which people were credited but I recognized some of the names. So in this...

There was a whole album's worth of material floating around on the p2p networks a year or so back that was duets of flutes and uileann pipes. I've no idea who the players were, but from my cursory listen it seemed that the whole recording was of the same two musicians. It seemed like it might have b...

Seamus Tansey in Dublin in June

Hi there, this is directed to the flute players (or others) in Dublin who might be in the know, will there be another workshop before Tansey's June 17th appearence at the Cobblestone?

Yours,

Baroque music provides an interesting comparison with ITM is several ways as well, most notably in the absolute need for a proper playing style to interprete the written music at all, especially with the French music which seems to be interpreted quite differently than it is written. On the other ha...

Hi, I fixed the link to the html version. You might need Word to read the .doc . I will try to post a pdf version at some point. The problem with the html one is that the footnotes and formating is not quite correct. I might try to tackle a more indepth answer to the Irish monks as composers theory ...

Gregorian Chant and ITM

Hey there, I've just written a short paper this semester for a course I'm taking at the University of Notre Dame on Gregorian chant analyzing the similarities between chant and Irish traditional music. If anyone is interested it is available in a slightly maligned html format at http://thebonnyprinc...

It's sometimes fun to play G tunes in lower keys on the flute, as the rearranging that must neccesarily take place with most of them sometimes leads to some interesting developments. I'm fond of the tune George White's played in D. I played it in the lower key for a fluter in Chicago that I'm fond o...

Johnny Henry's favourite, being named after the famous Johnny "Watt" Henry, fiddle player and brother to Chicago's Kevin Henry. Kevin doesn't seem to know the tune, curiously.

Johnny Henry's is also known as "Donald blue".
