I think that ring's just part of the bass drone. Egan made the lower sections as long as he could here, for some reason. As for getting the tuning slide on to the baritone reg, maybe they used a hammer... Right underneath the "exit" of the piece attached to the baritone reg, underneath the...

I mended an exploding naug bag once with wood blocks and c-clamps. Pretty randy.

Ferguson's Egan pipes

I am curious about a set Michael Egan made in the old days for Charles Ferguson, a blind piper who had Egan make the set while he (Egan) lived in Brooklyn, New York. Ferguson went on to tell people that the pipes were presented to him by Queen Victoria; the details of the story are in O'Neill's Iris...

Yesss...I think it set some kind of record for bulk. Got Robbie Hannon laughing pretty good.
Nowadays I play a somewhat larger bag, though.

Another wax issue, I guess you'd call it: I've had tape on the G of my Taylor? chanter for a long time now, because if you rush the G to flatten it it flattens the F# a bit too much, especially if you play off the knee. I imagine the maker kept it on the knee at all times, that being the way with th...

Some chanters have a slight oval cross section right after being reamed. This may be due to flex in the timber as the reamer cuts across and then with the grain. When reaming on a lathe, a rrrRRRrrrRRRrrrRRR sound can be heard... Ted Heh, why'd ya post this twice, Ted? Are your fingers making a rrr...

As tuning can vary from reed to reed a rush for lower holes or bees wax can be used to bring it into tune. I have chanters with wax in them for years with no problems. Ted So Ted, you're a finicky type dude-do you go out and get special beeswax? I've a block of this highly refined stuff-white in co...

Bruce often reads this board. Ask him a specific question and you will probably get a response. OK. HEYYYYYYY BRRRRRUUUUCCCCCE! I was told his flat pipes were loudish-3/16" throats, bell of 1/2" or so, maybe more, big fingerholes. You know, loud. Sort of. Not like Woofe or Brad Angus-narr...

Geoff Woofe wrote of the paradox of the old flat chanters using reeds which had a higher crow than the newer concert pitch chanters, which needed a flatter reed to play in modern concert pitch. Has anyone worked at resolving this dilemma-making a wide bore concert pitch chanter that uses a smaller r...

Nope. Blackwood (grenadillo) and Cocobolo are from two different families. A reaction to one doesn't guarantee a reaction to the other. djm Hmmm? African blackwood is Dalbergia Melanoxylon, Cocobolo is Dalbergia Retusa. At least in the states. Same genus here, Dalbergia containing the true "ro...

Patrick, You've done a great job filtering out the pops and hissing sounds off Touhey's 78! Great stuff! (And I LOVE that bit that Tuohey does on the regs during "Miss McLeod's" - what a showman he was! BrianC We can do a lot at home, but listening to a real class job of restoring these o...

I had some McNulty regulators. Maybe they belong to this set...very wide keys in blocks, almost all of which had broken and needed later replacement. One of the new blocks stuck into the bore. Pretty abysmal. Aluminum and really cheap plastic. I was told he built jump jets for a living, it kind of s...

Somewhere's I heard that you could just get a practice set from Matt and pay him back when you had the chance. He just wanted to see people learning to play. I also remember something about him using old bayonets for reamers. Jerry O'Sullivan uses a Michael Dow bellows that's patterned after one of ...
