Re: Fingering question

I finger E as if I am playing an on the knee E but raise the chanter off the knee and use a bit more bag pressure than usual.

I haven't had any luck with half holing.

I haven't played any fast stuff using the off the knee F nat, I use it in slow airs.

Re: WTB: Ezee-drone reeds

Phil, on your composite reed bodies, do you use the inserted/soldered rod strictly as a handle, or do you insert it all the way into the tube so that it gets filed down along with the lay, perhaps to prevent the walls of the tube from getting squashed? Seems like the latter would make for harder fi...

Re: Unmodified in Tune Pipes?

Everybody has humidity problems (Oboes play wet reed, UP plays dry reeds) and you can force the chanter to be in tune, but you may have to make two reeds, one reed in 65 Deg F weather, another in 90 deg F. All you can do is delay the response of the reed to the humidity by one or more "weatherp...

Re: the perils of reedmaking

I play a C 3/4 frankenset (3 different makers) and I believe/know that flat sets are easier to reed. I use the wet/dry sandpaper that I get from automobile supply store and my coarsest is 220 grit. I rough sand with that, raise the grain by wetting and thoroughly drying it under a 40 watt incandesce...

Re: Reedmaking (beginner's question)

You don't need a whole lot of staples and I would think that Pat would make you some staples for a reasonable price. Then you don't really need to use a mandril unless you need to adjust the eye shape or the narrow diameter of the eye. I wouldn't think that would be needed with Pat's chanter and sta...

Re: Reedmaking (beginner's question)

If the reed is flat overall, that's an indication that the reed is overscraped. In the reedmaking classes I took in '96-7, the attempted fix is to chop "2 spider's legs" off the lips. Do you have the video "The Heart of the Instrument" ? That gives you several approaches to reedm...

Re: What note does your bass drone play without the top on?

I think BK prefers a brass body and a spruce tongue now. He made one for Jerry O'Sullivan when I took reedmaking in 1997 at Elkins, WV. Jerry said it was the best behaved baritone reed he had ever played.

Re: What note does your bass drone play without the top on?

My Hillmann bass drone is just a few cents sharp of G. I put a short extention on it and it gives a new perspective, but I don't use it that often
