Re: Carbony High D

I also played the Carbony at Dublin. It was a nice whistle but I much prefer the Burkes.

Re: Wanting more out of my tin whistle.

Go with aluminum. It is light and has a great tone. I have a brass D that is very good but I would prefer the aluminum. My aluminum Bb is a wonderful. Joanie Madden also plays aluminum Burkes as well as others. Brian McCoy of the Kells plays only aluminum Burkes. Try them all.

Re: Clare vs. good ole' generation

If you play the 2 you will see the difference immediately. I have Clares, Gens and Walton's they are different from each other. The Clare most resembles the Feadan which is no longer made.

Re: Newbie

If you don't like the taste of aluminum in your mouth you might want to consider a Burke low D. The whistle is aluminum but the mouth piece has Delrin where the whistle meets the mouth. It is also a very nice low D.

Re: 2014 - ROLL CALL for C&F Whistlers & Learners

I have been here awhile. I love Irish Traditional music. Much of what I hear though is Irish/American traditional music. I have been playing whistle ever since I had a heart attack and had to have bypass surgery. It helps me build up my lung power. I have the usual collection of whistle in most keys...

Re: Burke C

Go for the Burke. They are very good whistles. Each key plays the same. There are no adjustments needed when switching from one Burke whistle to another. I have a D and Bb. Brian McCoy of the Kells plays aluminum Burke whistles exclusively. Joanie Madden plays aluminum Burke whistles as well as her ...

Thanks Mike Burke

I want to thank Mike for the service he gives his customers. I bought an aluminum Bb 2 years ago at the Dublin Irish Festival. The lower section came loose so I took it with me this year to see if he could fix it. He fixed it in about 5 minutes while I tried a low d and other whistles. No charge. BT...

Re: Protective cases and cleaning kits?

Harbor freight sells aluminum cases lined with foam for a cheap price. You can carve the foam up to suit your whistles. For my high whistles I have a roll up case which I keep in the briefcase I no longer needed when I retired.

The only A whistle I have is an Alba hi A. It is a very good whistle with a fair amount of back pressure. It sounds great.

Re: Other key whistles for a beginner?

If I could only have 2 keys in my whistles it would be D and Eb. I have a Humphrey D, Eb set that are really nice. The D is great and the Eb sings. Eb just has a nice bright sound. A Gen Eb is usually very good right out of the stores whistle basket. Fortunately I have several including a Cillian Ob...

Nobody has mentioned Finbar Furey co-developer of the Overton low D. He is a fine singer as well.

Re: How did you get your start in whistling?

In 2002 my wife and I went to Ireland for a vacation. I bought a few CDs at the usual tourist places. We drove through the south and west of Ireland. We spent some time in West Clare and I didn't know I was in ITrad country. I went to Connemara and visited Malchi Kearns shop and bought a typical tou...

Re: Distinguish me

The third is the recorder. I guess that the first is a Feadog and the second a Walton's. I play the recorder from time to time. They can be very nice on fast tunes. One of the best "whistles" I heard at a festival was a recorder playing traditional French tunes.
