Re: Eight-key flute: playing low C# and C

In pre-covid days I'd have suggested having an eight keyed player play your flute. If they can get a strong C and C# you're good to go. The mechanisms are somewhat fragile sometimes and a mild knock or putting too much twisting pressure on the keys if you take that foot off and on can cause issues. ...

Re: 53 million plus views for a whistle

They look like they are having a lot of fun. The "tripleside didgeridoo" (according to wikipedia) seems to pack quite a punch. And the video that automatically fed into my YouTube the Sheenealahi Set has the whistle player sort of channeling Ian Anderson in Jethro Tull's Aqualung. It later...

Re: Recommendations for a first time wooden flute owner?

Antique flutes, especially cocus often need less oil than newer ones. This may be something that comes from the stability of old wood. I don't know if there were modifications done on the inside of the bore in the case of this flute. That might affect its need for oil. You could always ask the Olwel...

Re: Wet Players

Yes, the dripping flute end is quite familiar. I wonder if it has to do with weather as well as how we're blowing. I have noticed days I do drip and days I don't, and have occasionally warned session mates next to me. Moisture coming out of the end of the whistle seems less common. Though I just may...

Re: Wet Players

Pancelticpiper, thanks for the insight on the various types of blowers in a pipe band. When this post first popped up I watched everyone comment on how to adapt the whistle. But no one commented on techniques that might help a wet blower blow drier. I tried writing up some ideas, but ended up with m...

Why not check with Skip Healy himself? He'd seem like the obvious first choice.

Re: Clarinet style Bb key - Love, Hate, or Kill?

My idea may seem sort of wonky depending on where you live. I live near Chicago which has a rich landscape of experienced woodwind repairers. When I had a similar problem with the too short Cnat on a M&E keyed flute I went to one of those guys, showed him my issue and he soldered an actual clari...

Re: Two cork bumpers on flute keys missing - is it intention

If your flute is from a living maker ask them. I am sure they would be able to tell you their intent. And don't be shy if you got it used. Most makers will be glad to advise you. Making a bumper is very easy. Cork can be sliced from the inside of a wine bottle cork or you can pick up strips intended...

beware cheap humidistates

I have a number of non-mechanical humidistats that I have collected over the years. They are basically the same coin sized disks that are installed in violin cases. Some of them stand alone on feet and others are designed to stick on a surface with adhesive. One of my favorites is actually from the ...

I'd bet you'd likely find one or someone who could find you one if you got in touch with Jem Hammond. He's on this forum, though II can't remember his user name. He is also on Facebook as an individual and admins a Facebook page called The Flute History Channel. Good Luck!

I've not been as active on the forum of late, so I don't know how often you've been doing this, but I'd encourage you to keep posting WTB now and again. You never know.

Re: Women fluters

This may have been a thing, but it doesn't have to be. I can't remember who the player was, but a friend posted a clip on FB of a young woman playing a Hammy Hamilton flute and barking up a storm. Barking or not barking is a stylistic choice.
