Re: Case to repurpose to hold low D and a few other whistles
Take a look at clarinet cases designed to hold 1 piece or fully assembled clarinets. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165763782754 Mine holds basically a full set of whistles from high D all the way to low C, but you do have to take them out their individual cases to get them all in, so they do scratch a ...

Re: Is Alba still selling whistles?
Thanks all for the additional data points, I think I need a bigger chart! So we have Goldie mezzos in A and G using 15mm bore, and Goldie mezzos in G and F measured with 18.2mm, 18.5mm, and 19mm bores. (I wonder whether Colin's batches of tubing have varied a bit, or people are measuring slightly d...

Re: WTB Goldie Low F (and others)
Update!
I’ve now found an F, F# and Bnat.
Still on the lookout for an Eb! Preferably narrow bore and hard blowing, but will consider any!

Re: Is Alba still selling whistles?
I bought an Alto G from Alba in early January this year. That's good to hear. If you wouldn't mind, could you measure the ID of your Alto G? I have a chart of whistle bores from various makers but no Alba mezzo/alto G yet. So far I have mezzo G Freeman (brass tube) 15mm mezzo G Freeman (alloy tube)...

Re: Clogging, Toothpaste, Etc.
As often as this topic comes up it honestly baffles me every time. Once I’ve got a whistle warmed up, I almost never have any issues with clogging at all. Cover the windway, couple strong breaths trough the whistle to warm it up, and then you’re away. Maybe it’s to do with my style of blowing, but ...

WTB Goldie Low F (and others)
Looking to fill in the gaps of my collection of Goldies. The main one I need is a low F, but also open to low Eb, F# and B nat. My preference is for hard blowers, but will consider any. I’m based in the UK, but travel regularly to the USA so would be easy enough to buy from either location. Thanks!

Re: Looking into Thompson Flutes
Damian is a great guy, and a great flute maker. I have an Eb made by him which sounds wonderful and is a joy to play - he does a very very nice embouchure cut. I think there's a video or two of me playing some of his flutes on his website.

Re: Best method for Recording whistle at home
What's the room like that you're recording in? Is it acoustically treated at all? Personally I've found best results come from a nice LDC (you could also try a tube LDC or a ribbon mic) that is at least 12 inches away from the whistle. The problem with this is that if your room doesn't sound good, y...

Re: Set Building
Maybe not much help to you - and I don't exactly know why - but I would never play a set of 3 hornpipes. Usually played in pairs, I honestly cannot think of any recording of a musician playing a set of 3 hornpipes, although I'm sure they must exist somewhere. My advice - leave it at 2. This is why ...

Re: How did you learn to play the whistle?
Could you elaborate a bit on that? When would you consider a crann ill placed? At the moment for instance, I try to learn "the moving cloud" and the two versions I like best are, obviously Matt Molloy and the other one is from Orlaith McAuliffe, and if I hear it correctly, she uses a coup...

Re: High C - Optima Cobre or Killarney? Your Thouhgts
I appreciate very much the time taken by all to try to convey what they like and dislike about their whistles. Due to the several suggestions of people to just play Generation and having had an experience lately where I purchased a well know makers whistle only to find out I really like my mass pro...

Re: Colin Goldie alto/mezzo G sizes
One other thing I realised that I forgot to mention in my previous reply, my standard/wide bore is LOUD. Like, the upper second octave is really really loud. Like, top E is around 100 db kinda loud....

Re: Colin Goldie alto/mezzo G sizes
I have a standard bore Goldie G, and it’s a great whistle. The one I have is a .9 but it plays pretty hard, I think perhaps due to the wider bore. It takes a lot of push and air in the upper 2nd octave. I have to say, if and when I get the chance, I will likely go for a narrow bore variant but with ...

Re: Ayriway whistles
All other things aside, I really don't care for the look of those whistles. The big fat wooden head on the skinny metal body just looks wrong to me.
