Re: Roy McManus Bb

Lovley sounding whistle. I currently have one of Roy's D whistles in Spanish olive as my "main" whistle and i love it. One of the best whistles I've played and i think the only one I'd choose over it would be an Oz, but with a fully keyed grinter on order, I can't be affording one of those...

Re: Need recommendations for a D whistle

Going to throw another name into the hat; Roy mc'manus whistles. I got one in Spanish olive recently and it's jumped straight into the slot of my 'main whistle'. Truly beautiful whistle, great tone and responsiveness, good volume and can be pushed far enough without breaking. I'm never struggling to...

Re: Hi! i'm new here!

The maker has just replied to me. Looks like D whistles are around £110 ish, plus 30-40 for shipping. From the videos, that doesn't seem too bad for what looks to be a lovley whistle. I wonder if the maker would consider doing a whistle tour. I'd love to try one.

Re: Hi! i'm new here!

Hi and welcome! Tasty playing there man.

Those whistles look pretty cool. I wonder if anyone else here has tried them? nice light and full sound going off your videos. I've sent the maker a message on Facebook to enquire as to prices and stuff. I'd really like to try one.

Re: Large Bore High D.

perhaps take a look at susato whistles, and pretty much any wooden whistle (dependant on budget of course), parks was also a good shout. Will feel like more than just a thin brass tube in your hands, which seems to be what you're looking for.

Re: Whistle embouchure

You really can't be scared to blow into a sussato. They're a fantastic whistle, but do take a while to get used to them. They take a lot of puff to get the upper notes in the second octave consistently, and there can be some ear piercing sounds that come out of it while you're trying. I think they'r...

Re: worth noting

I don't see anything really unusual about that kind of grip. Whatever works, works. I'm fairly sure McGoldrick holds his upper hand this way, as do many others i'm sure.

Re: Tin whistle conundrum

Not much more to add really, I think your main questions have been answered perfectly. The only thing I'll add is about the whistle being "non transposing" Most whistles are keyless and thus considered not to be chromatic for all intensive purposes. That doesn't however make them non trans...

They look lovely! Do you notice much of a difference between the tone of them? I'd love to here them one after the other!

Re: whistle making supplies

Thanks for the quick reply guys! Plenty for me to be reading through. I was already thinking of a tuning slide, so depending on what kind of metals I can get my hands on I may go for something like that. I'll get round to phoning some tool suppliers and see what's available fairly locally :)

whistle making supplies

I was wondering where I might be able to get the drill bits and reamers for whistle making here in the UK. I fancy having a go at making a wooden whistle in D and have been offered the use of a lathe, but don't know where I'd go about getting bits long enough. If anyone could point me in the right d...

Re: I wonder if anyone else......

Thanks both for the replies, I know it's just a matter of preference, I just find it a little strange that I've never seen it discussed. My session flute is an old pratten style keyless so I'm not playing a flute where I can rotate the sections most of the time, which I think is why I've never tried...

I wonder if anyone else......

Hi all, I've recently been toying around a bit with the "Nicholson" practice of turning out the RH section of the flute, to offset the finger holes of the right hand. I played around with it a bit, different amounts of offsetting etc and decided that i don't really like it. I did however f...

Re: Rudall serial number register up and running

Patsy's a wonderful flute player, always at sessions around Birmingham and it'd be rare to see him sitting out of a tune because he didn't know it. The Rudall he usually plays at sessions is a beauty too, silver crown (although it's not a patent head), pewter Eb, wood's in wonderful condition too, b...

Re: Double-fingered taps

I think that for me in my playing then it depends more on the speed that i'm playing at. If i was playing, say a reel, at a fairly slow and steady pace, I'd put a little more thought into the notes that I was tapping on. I.e. If I have 2 Gs to play, but the reel had no Fsharps in it, I'd tap an E ra...
