Re: Important Flute Questions

1) Is it my bad embouchure, or does a boxwood flute take until spit is dribbling down the sides before a good clear tone comes out? It may be that the flute is leaking, as has been suggested above, but it may just as well be that you need a few hours to get your best tone. Practice a few more years...

In the dialects of some formerly german regions which are now Poland, o umlaut moves to a somewhat open a umlaut / e sound (like the e in congress, approximately), but in most other dialects, o umlaut doesn't change that much. IPA for Boehm doesn't even need a special font, I realized: [bø:m]. (That...

I'm IPA-less (no suitable fonts installed) and tired, and I hope you can listen to this (it's in AIFF, not MP3). I say "Böhm, Theobald Böhm, Böhmflöte", meaning Boehm, Theobald Boehm, Boehm flute.

You need to use thread that does not swell when it gets wet, because that increases the danger of cracks at the sockets. Any synthetic will do. If your flute maker recommends linen, then linen will be fine as well. I've heard that cotton thread swells too much, so I don't use it, but to be honest I ...

I guess it's only fair that when you get something for free, you can be expected to click around a little bit to download the files. For convenience you can always buy the CD on the comhaltas site or from iTunes (or get a book on scripting languages yourself).

Will people ever get enough.

Maybe you could post (in abc, dots, or sound file) the tunes in the versions you know them?

As the information is theoretically out in the world already (as everybody could go and take measurements from old flutes) I don't see a problem with giving them the plans. You might want to come to some agreement with them in writing that they may not use your name in advertising just because they ...

Sometimes I can sing or hum them, but sadly my voice lacks the range so I can't do it out loud. Yes, I have the range problem too :) But for me it's not about performance quality lilting, just that when I can't lilt a tune I know I don't have it yet. It's a two-step process, to first get the tune i...

Learning by ear does not equal picking up on the fly, and it does not need to be frustrating. There are great software tools where you can mark sections of a piece of music to repeat over and over, slow it down without changing pitch, or transposing from one key into another without changing speed (...

Given the other thread about sheet music, you might not like me writing that, but I remember tunes learned by ear much better than those learned from dots, and I'm fairly proficient in both.

Yes, pianos can be regulated for volume, but a harpsicord has only one level of volume. In particular, it was demonstrated to me that the tones on a harpsicord (my memory tells me that these were harpsicords) can be bent, by manipulating the finger pressure on the keys, which basically is the reaso...

jem,

I think we agree on all points (in this discussion), sorry if it came across otherwise.
