the cliff's notes version is that they require lots of tweaking and upkeep, even after getting a major overhaul from a real pipemaker. Lots of reed tweaking, leak finding, leak plugging, key adjustment, repadding, rehemping, leather treatment &c &c &c. It depends on how desperate one is....
