Re: Flat Chanter upper octave
Probably most of us had a problem loging onto this site... nice to see it back up. That small loss at the top corner of your reed is probably not a going to affect the workings and yes many reedmakers clip the corners off, some of then with quite exagerated and uneven amounts... perhaps they have a ...

Re: Flat Chanter upper octave
As your point of reference, long time playing a concert pitch half set, it could be that your idea of light pressure might be further up the scale than my own but I'll try to make some suggestions regarding those regulators. It could be that you may need to scrape the regulator reeds when you close ...

Re: Flat Chanter upper octave
A reed leak ? Yes, anything is possible. Leaks in the binding, at the socket , at the sides of the head. reed too low in pitch or too high ( reed head speed)..... it is all a mine field. Closing the reed a little might ease the pressure needed for those upper notes, then an overall drop in pressure ...

Re: Flat Chanter upper octave
From your description it appears to me that you are probably blowing too hard. Many pipers coming from Concert Pitch will be used to pressing harder on the bag than is ideal for the Flat sets. Almost every customer arriving at my house to collect their Flat set is surprised at the light pressure req...

Re: Beo
Beo CD has arrived in central France, many thanks Peter for posting it out!! I always get a kick out of recordings made on sets ' knocked out in my back shed' and this one appears , at first ,to follow a similar ethos BUT, there is obviously a massive amount of operator input. Lots of fine detail to...

Re: Bellows style with no need for seasoning ever
My old bellows got a new leather gusset in 1980.... I would not call it airtight anymore but it has been used to supply the wind for every set I have made and though it leaks a good bit these days it is still in service. It is more important that the bag is airtight, the bellows is not supposed to '...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators
Horses for courses, it's perfectly natural that some people just don't "get" WB concert pitch , but one things for sure, if WBCP had not been developed Uilleann pipes of all pitches would be dead by now. RORY I think that's perhaps a little too broad a brush stroke to say " all pitch...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators
Soft , Purring Pipes is what the UP is all about for me.... Those CP's are getting far too loud.... trying to compete wih Accordions and Concertinas... no point. My wife plays the Cabrette and that is one loud fecker and I found an accordeon that is loud enough to accompany it.... and I have a conce...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators
Ah well, these slide off basses can be either too tight or not tight enough but the very idea of a flat session with Bodhrans and Banjos.... my word !!
Just trying to scandalise the laity…
'Laity' ? If I knew what that meant I might be insulted..... but 'tis probably another name ...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators
Why “too easily”, Geoff? Do I conjure visions of Wooff basses rocketing out of position in a crowded session, skewering bodhrans and cleaving banjo heads? (A flat session of course). Ah well, these slide off basses can be either too tight or not tight enough but the very idea of a flat session with...

Re: Vanishing Bass Regulators
I have no idea if 3/4's are trending right now but not so much amongst my customers. I have made 3 in the last 11 years and I am not sure if I have another on the waiting list. All the rest have been standard three regulator sets... though those bass regulators are easily ( some would say too easily...

Wilbert Garvin
Reports have been posted on social media of the death of Wilbert Garvin. Today is his 85th birthday and I was looking forward to, hopefully, meeting him at the NPU Tional. Many happy hours spent in Wilbert's company , he also contributed to our knowledge with several publications, a patron of NPU he...

Re: Rushing the Bore to Flatten Notes
The 'rushing' of a regulator will lower the notes because it makes the bore smaller , in diameter or volume. If one compares the small parallel bore of a Northumbrian Small pipe chanter where a much lower note can be achieved at the same length as a UP regulator due to the reduced diameter. Yes I kn...

Re: Flat set makers (for mere mortals)
My C chanters, whilst being based on an ancient chanter, happen to be happy playing in modern C. My B chanters, based on a Coyne, tend to prefer to play 30-40 cents flat of modern B, although they can be reeded to play in A440 pitch. The C#'s prefer to stay 25-40 cents flat of A440. The Bb's, based...
