There were potato varieties in England at the time of the famine, which were resistant to blight. They were not allowed into Ireland for seed potatoes.

Repadding is the best fix and only takes a couple of hours. Most other "temporary" fixes are less satisfactory. Remove the keys and note each pin direction and location on removal, for block mounted keys. Remove the old pads. Heat will undo pads using shellac to afix them or scrape off the...

Science strikes again. In theory, a flute made of balsa wood or paper mache' shold sound the same as a metal or ebony one. In practice, most players can tell the difference. This may be due to the finish of the bore as well as the undercut where the tone holes meet the bore. A softer wood will give ...

Sounds like the reed is still to hard. If the bridle is not holding the lips too open then scraping the bottom of the scrape should lighten up the pressure. This will also lower the pitch so the lips will have to be trimmed to raise the pitch. In no case should the scrape at the back of the reed be ...

I don't make pipes. Much of my info. comes from conversations with Benedict Koehler and David Quinn, Geoff Wooff and others, as well as observations of a number of old and new sets. I know K&Q use different designs for bass drone resonators, depending on the pitch. Typically the baritone drone w...

An interesting acoustical analysis. My approach, as are most pipemakers, is strictly pragmatic. See what has been done in the past and copy that. Try various combinations and LISTEN carefully to the results these changes make, then settle on designs that give the most aurally pleasing results. Small...

I have seen old sets with either hollow pucks or blind bored pucks, (without a hollow). The 180 degree bend ending with a puck or trumpet termination makes it easier for the player to reach the drone start or stop the drone with a touch of a finger. The amount of hollowing, or lack thereof, makes a ...

I don't use a popping valve at present as I am playing a Rowsome style chanter that does not need one. They can be handy for keeping the bell sealed while going thru contortions to play the regulators though. Make sure it doesn't hang up. Some models are better than others.

Just my point, brianc. Scottish smallpipers then would then play "the smalls", etc. etc.. Such invented terms have a habit of becomming "accepted" as proper with enough use over time. I may be accused of being anal, well so be it. Does anyone else feel as I do, or is this just a ...

I don't mean to pick on TOM308, but only in recient years have I seen the pipes refered to as "the uilleanns", without pipes being added. Uilleann is an adjective to the noun, pipes. I understand many play both GHB and UP, and the usual reference to the pipes may be confusing. Before Flood...

I prefer a low bag and a medium to large bag. Paddy Keenan developed some shoulder problems in his youth and prefers the stretch of vinyl to assist his style. He admits to using the bellows to overinflate the bag and plays the pipes with the bellows, using the bag stretch to do most of the work. Thi...
