That instrument could easily be 100 years old. Take a look at an old whistle of mine:

If you come along to the Southern California Tionól in November www.socalpipers.com you will have lot's of oppertunities to see samples of Mr. Hubbert's work. Thanks, Patrick. I saw your announcement, and I'm going to try to make it. I spoke to Michael Eskin about the event last night, and I'm hopi...

I heard that he used to work with Rod Cameron In 1987 I watched Michael and Rod construct a jig for drilling toneholes (each at a different angle and size) in a reproduction baroque bassoon body. They used a fine old instrument as a template, and placed rods and sleeves in the carefully masked orig...

Michael has lived near Mendocino, a few hours north of San Francisco, for at least twenty years. I've never seen a set of his pipes except in photos, but I've known him since about 1978, and I can assure you that his workmanship and attention to detail is topnotch. He's built many kinds of instrumen...

single reeds must work for a varity of notes, but I'm kind of guessing. There are several sorts of pipes that use a single reed in their chanter, including the Swedish sackpipa and a number of the eastern European beasts. In fact, the drone and chanter reeds in my sackpipa are absolutely identical....

Steve, take a look at this discussion:

Your whistle sounds similar to the Barnett Samuels and Generation whistles discussed there.

My Barnett Samuel G whistle (shown in that thread) appears to be about 140 years old.

A reallyscalloped chanter:

OK, it's not exactly the sort of chanter we're discussing here, but it serves to illustrate a point; it's extremely easy to finger this chanter, even after making Lorenzo's fruitcake. :D

Re: Anybody who has even been accused of Nitpicking

I do not do this. However, when tailgated I ALWAYS respond by setting my speed to EXACTLY the speed limit. No more, no less. Of course, this means I enrage the tailgater by my offense of not speeding. Sooner or later, it will get me killed in a road rage episode. But, I persist in this dangerous be...

The long time piper is Kevin Carr, late of the SF area, now living down in Medford or somewhere, maybe for the Shakespeare festival. I'd heard he was playing the pipes with a Grateful Dead cover band, too... http://www.wakethedead.org/ Kevin Carr is a great guy, and an amazingly well-rounded musici...

Thanks, Kevin, Peter, & Pat for your comments. I've continued digging in my library, and found another passing reference in Patric Sky's A Manual for the Irish Uilleann Pipes , which mentions a Matthew [sic] Kennedy of Cork on page 14. I've been aware for about twenty years of a supposedly prist...

Maurice & Alf Kennedy, pipemakers

I'm curious to know what you folks can tell me about the Kennedys and their pipes. When were they active? Were they brothers, or father and son? Who did they learn pipemaking from, and who influenced their building style? Are there any prominent performers that use their instruments now or in the pa...

For what it's worth- it doesn't work! I play there every Sunday evening. Actually our session is one of the lucky ones, 7-9 pm on a Sunday is quiet relative to the Dantean Fri. and Sat. night time slots. The landlord is a sound man though (Tom Mulligan, Neillidh Mulligan's brother) and shou...

Thanks for sharing your excellent pictures, Michael.

I love the placard posted at the end of the bar in The Cobblestone:

PLEASE RESPECT MUSICIANS

All pubs everywhere should have one of these
