Re: Which tin whistle should i get?
On the advice of some of the members of this site ( I forget the thread), I decided to play only one whistle for awhile instead of constantly switching. I think this is really good advice and I follow it as well, mostly playing my Freeman Gen-D most of the time. But once or twice a week I'll play o...

Re: I Painted My PVC Low D Whistle
I was wondering about any hazard with your mouth on the dry paint if I paint it? Here's the Material Safety Data Sheet for Krylon Fusion Satin Black . MSDS specs on paints have little to say about the dried condition of that paint. Virtually all of the chemicals listed for Krylon are volatiles and ...

Re: Purchased my first whistle
just went out and bought my first whistle today, a Generation in the key of D. I have pretty minimal experience with instruments and cannot read music very well but i am pretty excited to be starting out on this little whistle. Glad you found C&F as I'm a newbie and it's good to have others in ...

Re: What is "lipping up"?
It's a flute term that, frankly, I don't think I've ever heard applied to whistle before, except maybe by very loose analogy. Are you sure you're not confusing flute / whistle context? Look here...first post. Claim is that a flat note was 'lipped up': http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewtopic.php?...

What is "lipping up"?
Several experience players have made references to 'lipping up' a particular note. Is that something that can be explained to a n00b?

How did you do that if not by using the tunable option?rosehebrew wrote:"tunable option". I have them set to standard A 440 and that is that. No big deal, just wondering.

I'm a fully qualified n00bie, with a month or so of experience. I respond only as a balance for those here with considerable experience. 1. What are you working on now? Avoiding sour notes, mostly, but getting my fingers to wiggle fast enough as well. 2. Tell us about a recent achievement. I managed...

Re: abc notation and "dots"
What's the benefit of abc notation over normal musical (graphical) notation? While several more talented people than I have answered this question, as a new guy, it amazes me that all have missed what I see as the big advantage. It is: ABC notation, shoved through software, gives me both sheet musi...

Re: Why an Eb whistle?
Let me try to simplify this for you... On every major key whistle, you can play a scale from the root note to it's next octave the exact same way using these fingerings: Ha...you may have identified the ONLY thing I understand :-) ...but I just don't see a practical reason for a whistle player to k...

Re: Why an Eb whistle?
You'll struggle to play a tune in the key of C on a D whistle. Transpose the abc into the key of D. If you're just playing on your own, then play it on any whistle you like, but if you wanted to play it in the key of C, pick up a C whistle and play it as if it were a D whistle. Hope that makes sens...

Re: Why an Eb whistle?
As for why you have Eb whistles, here's some conjecture on my part. I'd probably blame Beethoven,Mozart,Mahler and Hayden. Not sure exactly who started it but a fair amount of classical music is written in Eb. Some call it the "heroic" key. Ah...maybe that's it. From the responses (thanks...

Why an Eb whistle?
I'm a n00b, trying to figure out "keys" with pennywhistles. I'm perplexed. Why, when, and where does someone find a use for an Eb whistle as is sold in the Blackbird set of whistles?

Thanks sooooo much for your response about Band O'Shears and the other pointers to music sites. These are places I hadn't run across yet. I've just spent the last hour listening to your YouTube channel and early recordings in the ITMarchive. Wow...I have much to listen to...much to learn. Cheers ---...
