Re: How to leard to blow the bag

As an Uilleann piper I've followed this thread with interest in case any of the findings are relevant to Uilleann drones. Ideally though, I guess it would need an expert in both types to translate it all for me. So is it the case that increasing the volume of the tone chamber relative to the total v...

Re: Bigley half set for sale

There used to be a graph of a Taylor bore somewhere on David Daye's site; a bit hard to read but gave you a general idea. And I think Bill Haneman or someone posted details of an early Taylor bore on the Chiff.

Re: Bigley half set for sale

A similar shaped turnaround for the bass drone slide can be found on some Tayloresque pipes. And the support bracket for the U bend on their bass regulators has the same graceful shape.

Re: Flat C#, every other note seems good

Thank you Geoff, That information was a great help. I had the chart with C natural at -31 but knew of the existence of the other one. Only that you posted I would have thought that Dave Hegarty's chart would be the one to follow. I've re-tuned my chanter because it wasn't quite right, was somewhere...

Re: Daye Practice Set - downsides?

I was almost ready to agree with you there, Richard, when I remembered the old saying:- "You don't look at the mantelpiece when you poke the fire" and that reminded me that even old sayings need to be challenged sometimes. IMHO when both form and function are at their best then they can ma...

Re: Electronic Regulators?

Looks like you're on your own with with this one, PP. But good on you for trying out the unusual! First and foremost, I guess you're thinking about training-up a "magic thumb" like Padraig McGovern's so that you can touch the screen easily. Then I suppose you would be strapping the phone t...

The guy's got no drones. Is that why he is so happy? But maybe he's laughing because he knows the geeks will be wondering where they are!

Re: truckleehowe

Some of Séamus's folkloric storytelling flourishes couldn't have been meant to take literally. For example, there's a recording of him playing a couple jigs, including Port an Bráthair. He explains that the title means The Reverend Brother's Jig... "in the language of the Saxon." Saxon?? ...

Interesting terminology. Given the current circumstances, I wonder how much longer it will remain in use?

From the sellers description for comparative reasons of Those other pipes. " perfect for rallying tattooed warriors to charge naked into a Roman legion." I wonder was it this that lead to the downfall of the Roman empire . According to some people the Roman Empire still exists in the new ...

Re: Brag Angus B set

One primary deviation from published versions of Just Intonation is the Perfect Flat Seventh which I like to use for the C natural in the low octave. This allows a beautifull harmony with the drones but being 29 cents flat of an equal tempered C it also allows room ( in pitch height) for the piper'...

Re: McGovern’s extended regs

I vaguely recall someone once suggested a kind-of free reed assemblage to replace the regs. I guess something like that might really open-up the chordal possibilities. On the downside I think free reeds tend to get louder when the air pressure goes up so maybe the idea would be more suited to someth...
