Re: What percentage of pipers play flat sets?
I don't adjust the chanter reed for this. Like I said earlier, I only use the E drones for one or two tunes that I play at home so I don't spend time trying to get things spot on.

Re: What percentage of pipers play flat sets?
But if I follow correctly, that'd be difficult to do with notes like B that were too flat against the drones. Taking the C chanter against D drones example, the 'B' is 16 cents flatter than equal temperament, where it is now supposed to be 2 cents sharper (like an 'A') . How would one sharpen those...

Re: What percentage of pipers play flat sets?
when you play B on a C chanter against D drones you will be 18 cent out of tune. Yep. Something like that, in theory. This is analogous to using E drones with a D chanter, which is something I do on a regular basis. I think it works (but if I posted a sound clip for others to judge you wouldn't kno...

Re: Stating the Obvious
Pat, I am struggling to understand what "darker" and "richer" mean to me in this context. When I listen to chanters I sometimes hear a very buzzy sound -presumably lots of harmonics there -maybe too many. Other times the sound can be less buzzy perhaps with the hint of a flute or...

Re: A 2008 Copy of a Patsy Brown Chanter by Brad Angus For Sale
The keys are a bit too skinny for the body, and have brass springs, while our chanters have nickel silver. Yes there are quite a few little brass bits on this set:- all the key springs and pins, the drone switch and the chanter inlet tube which may have been originally nickle plated. The broken bas...

Re: Tuning Question
One problem with the very flat C natural (-30 cents or more) is that it does not make a very good 5th or 4th with the Gs on the chanter. As quite a few tunes in ITM are based in G Ionian or G Mixolydian (either as "written" or transcribed) I think that a tuning closer to the 16:9 ratio (-4...

Re: Rubber tire inner tube pipe bag or bellows
I use cycle inner tube as a bellows connector pipe. It's nice and flexible, too flexible of course. So I insert short lengths of plastic plumbing pipe to stop it collapsing.
