Re: Whistle used performing Themes in “The Hobbit Trilogy Movies”

I think it was a collaborative effort with multiple whistles. In Return of the King, Sir James Galway plays high whistle and flute, and Jan Hendrickse played low whistle. Alan Doherty of Grada and aldoc was the whistle player credited on the LOTR, The Fellowship of the Rings, soundtrack: https://www...

The Mayflower Club, North Hollywood, California, USA

Heading to see Van Morrison at the Greek next week in LA, and I see there is a session not too far from my Aunt's house in Thousand Oaks, but it's in what seems like a unique venue...a British Expat Club - the Mayflower Club. Anyone been there? The info on their site mentions they are still masking ...

Re: Current Chicago Open Sessions Thursday or Friday Night

Just fyi for anyone else heading to Chicago. The session on Thursdays is definitely open, very friendly, and was a nice small group (me plus 4 others) the night I was there. Fun pub but do yourself a favor and do not get the fish and chips...worst I have ever, ever had (they make Long John Silvers s...

Re: Headless Flute

Nice find! They can definitely hold their own in a session if your embouchure is good. Tom is right about tuning and all. Are you planning to send it off for renovation and a custom headjoint?

Re: Embouchure help: I'm playing too flat

I also have a chronic problem with playing too flat on any and every of the direct-blown wind instruments I’ve used. I compensated for it in the hardware when I was a kid (extra short barrel on my clarinet, short staples on oboe reeds) and finally realized what was causing the problem quite a while...

Current Chicago Open Sessions Thursday or Friday Night

I've done some digging on the session, and it appears there is an open session Thursday nights at either the Galway Arms or the Irish Center. However, I want to make sure these are both still up and running post COVID and open to players dropping in. Also, times would be good for the Galway Arms ses...

Re: Transitioning from keyless to keyed

Eric,

Somehow I missed the initial posting! Either that, or being a long-term standard hold person (since day 1), I passed over it for someone else to answer. I hope you're getting along well with your keyed flute and found the best hold for you.

Re: Cork chunk fell off

I've had it happen before both on a delrin flute and a wooden flute. I doubt you did anything wrong and just lean towards the theory it sometimes happens and it's expected maintenance at some point. Corks and pads (on a keyed flute) are like tires and mufflers on cars...at some point they'll be repl...

Re: Cronnollys of MandE? Still in business?

I think that Michael only makes the R&R model flute these days...at least I've not seen anything new from him in quite some time. I do recall he called the R&R model the new model when they started making them, though, but their original model is long gone.

They can for sure honk, and the tuning is usually quite good! I've had three over the years, one F&P, an E. Baack and an FHP. All excellent flutes.

Re: Beginner flute upgrade: Galeon or Copley?

Thank you all for you input. On the Copley, is the hole spacing reasonable for a person with average size hands? I understand he can make accommodations but I think I would prefer it without special modifications. I have bog standard, average hands and find the Copley really easy on my hands. Eric
