Re: Mineral Oil?

FWIW, most commercial lip balms are petroleum based and, to my knowledge, there's no evidence of negative side effects using it. In fact, pure petroleum jelly is often cited as being a cheaper and safer lip balm than the sticks, which often include other additives that might be less safe. Selmer Bor...

Re: Which F key to choose (short or long) for new wooden flute.

Most ordering a five key would leave it off and have c. . Most, I think, would omit the C. Or, at least, I would - maybe some makers will chime in on this, regarding 5-key orders. To me, the long F is extremely useful, as already mentioned, when descending to D, where the short F can be a bit clums...

For the OP's info, I should say the example they asked about is of very recent vintage indeed, whatever its interim provenance.
Never mind the flutes. I can buy a helmet with an Ozzie Devil-horn logo!

Re: Olwell Nicholson flute (keyless): anyone interested?

For what it's worth, I have had a new Olwell keyless Pratten for five months. I was getting on alright with it's ease of playing, instant response, nimbleness and volume until I got a sweet playing mid 18th century small holed Cocus and realized that had the "real" flute sound I was looki...

Re: Opnions on best Sounding Delrin flutes

Are we giving opinions on the best sounding Delrins, or on which flute is preferred for its body-type, regardless of Delrin? If you want a Pratten, the Forbes is an amazing flute, and fully tunable at a lower price. The Copley, which fully deserves the high praise it's received, is based on a Hawkes...

Re: Geoffrey Ellis Pratten Style Flute - Tour Anyone?

Glad my comments have some relevance for you, Geoffrey, and that they were taken in the spirit I intended. Words are slippery things - in re-reading my own post(s), I realize I've used words that could imply more or less than I meant when using them, and I always worry I've over-stated some issues t...

Re: Geoffrey Ellis Pratten Style Flute - Tour Anyone?

I agree with Pat that this particular flute simply didn't feel ready, yet. I won't speculate why. Please feel free to speculate if you can! I know that it is a highly subjective process comparing a flute to another flute or evaluating it's character, performance, etc.. However, the value to me is i...

Re: Geoffrey Ellis Pratten Style Flute - Tour Anyone?

Let me just throw in that I didn't have any particular tuning issues with the Pratten - I didn't need to pull the slide out quite as much as I usually do, which either means the Ellis flute is a bit flatter, or that other flutes (for me), play a bit sharper. But that's what slides are for. So much d...

Re: Meyer style flute parts

Also, FWIW, nach-Meyers and other anonymous German flutes often have problems with the low C. I don't know if it's a mechanical weakness in design, but fixable, but it seems prevalent. I have a decent-sounding German flute, fully functional - if clumsy - down to the D flat. But it's hard, if not imp...

Re: Help me make up my mind

Only advice I can give you is what you shouldn't do - buy a cheap student Boehm flute from Craig's list. Used flutes usually need re-pads or an overhaul before they're properly playable, which will set you back double or more what you spent in the first place - a real cheap deal usually ends up in t...
