Re: Non-Flute CD you listen to over and over

Hempson - Musique Ancienne Irlandaise/Early Irish Music This introduced me to O'Carolan and is quite possibly my favorite album ever. It features the harpist Katrien Delavier who passed away prematurely in 1998. John Wright, who passed in 2013, also played on Topic Record's delightfully odd collect...

Re: CP: New Flute Tutor by Conal Ó Gráda

Is there any/some/much overlap between this and Hammy Hamilton's book? Or should everyone have both? Thanks and best wishes. Steve I find these books to be quite different. Conal's book focuses on playing technique and critical listening...with regard to the latter, it is really a thrill to pop in ...

Re: Norwegian Seaflute

Michael - Your seaflute really seems like a nice instrument. Could you post a photo? Also, I'm curious about the fingering (recorder vs. whistle). Does it have a thumbhole? Is it chromatic or diatonic (key of Am suggests the latter)? Is A the "bell tone", making the instrument slightly sho...

Re: Nickolson's Improved

The seller does mention that one key is a replacement. The long F must be it.

Re: For Lehart's Flute Users

I purchased an older Lehart flute earlier this year. The copper rings were all a dull but uniform orangy-mocha brown. In retrospect, this color was quite lovely. Great flute, by the way. However, I somehow decided that the thing to do was to polish the rings so they would look new--which they did......

For newer flutes, it's mostly a matter of the makers not seasoning the wood long enough What is the best advice for the consumer who wants to make sure the wood is properly conditioned? I am planning on placing an order for a fully keyed flute, and this thread has me rethinking my choice of maker (...

As for the "non-serial number theory", one wonders why they would stamp the Rudall & Rose name on flutes of a lower quality.

To go further, could it be that there are anonymous flutes out there that are really R&R seconds or prototypes?

My biggest influence has been Matt Molloy. When I first heard the Parting of Friends on the Music at Matt Molloy's CD, I just couldn't wait to get a flute. I know I probably should not try to play like him, but it's fun to try. As for another favorite not listed in the poll, I would mention Colm O'D...

So, if I've got the idea here, this is the same pitch and depth of our Bb flutes, the big jobbies with the long stretch, but made more playable, as shown in the photo. Yes--my low Bb flute measures 29 in. from embouchure to foot. I don't know whether Baines' measurements start at the end cap, the c...

David, I wasn't questioning your judgement at all. I was just pointing out that there are differences in the nomenclature used (and Baines makes reference to this). He gives a good discussion of these instruments which I find fascinating. According to Baines, the Bb bass (band) flute has an approx. ...

I have had very good experience dealing with the Von Huene workshop back in my recorder days. Very trustworthy and customer oriented. I believe they still have antique flutes restored by Friedrich von Huene for sale, but they are not posted on the web. You have to call for a listing. And they occasi...
