Re: New Lunasa CD "La Nua"

But will you have it for me to buy when I see you in Reston next month?

Re: Feedback on flute drawing

What Doug said -- if I could draw that well I think I'd draw more often! As far as feedback goes, I'd say the composition is more problematic than the draughtsmanship. (But in the final drawing I would improve the contrast/tonality.) There's no real focus for the viewer or any sense of movement. Com...

Northern Virginia Celtic Festival

The O’Neill-Malcom branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (CCE) will be hosting it's annual Celtic Festival on Sept 26th at the Auld Shebeen in Fairfax, Virginia. There will be multiple stages of music and dancing, but the highlight (just announced yesterday!) will be Liz Carroll performing with All-...

Re: Blodeugerdd: An Anthology of Welsh Music & Song

Does anyone know anything about the tune on Track 4 of this CD? It's listed as "Ton can Pensylvania" or "Pennsylvania Song Tune." I was curious about "Pembroke Spuds" and likewise found nothing on the Net. When I get a chance I might transcribe the first few bars and s...

Re: Blodeugerdd: An Anthology of Welsh Music & Song

I didn't get to see Crasdant at the Festival, but I bought one of their CDs and was surprised/happy to hear the Polthogue Jig, which I recently learned. It's a lovely tune, and I like the Crasdant name for it as well -- the Teapot Jig. After a more careful reading of the liner notes, I see that the...

Re: Blodeugerdd: An Anthology of Welsh Music & Song

Thanks so much, srt19170 for your account. Great stuff. Ceri is indeed a delightful, knowledgeable, gentle person. I'd warrant the people you saw him playing with were probably his current fiddle-playing musical partner Christine Cooper, and the other two were most likely from Sling near Bethesda.....

Re: Blodeugerdd: An Anthology of Welsh Music & Song

I made it down to the Festival today with my eleven-year old in tow. First stop was "Flutes & Pipes" which turned out to be Ceri Matthews and three other musicians whose names I cannot recall. (One was a woman, and the other two were from the same small village in NW Wales -- Slip? One...

Re: Blodeugerdd: An Anthology of Welsh Music & Song

(I am in one track, in duet with my erstwhile pupil Tom Scott.) Is it merely coincidence that two of the tunes involve drunkeness? Any US readers in reach of WDC, the Festival is starting tomorrow, I believe, and a good few of my friends from the Welsh trad scene are out there representing us all, ...

Re: New CD from John Wynne

I sure wish Claddagh had the option of downloadable MP3s. Absolutely. I have no interest in paying for media and packaging that I don't care about (and will throw away) not to mention shipping. On the other hand, we all know how resistant ITM is to change. It's a wonder they're not still shipping 7...

Re: Chappell Clintons - seen one lately?

S.A. Chappell advertised in the 1880's that he was a manufacturer of Siccama and Clinton flutes - until recently I hadn't seen an example of his Clinton model. See http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/Chappell-Clinton-Equisonant-2001.htm Seeing as it is stamped "2001" it's probably a forgery :-) -...

Re: Help identifying a jig

I got it from my friend Sean McComiskey... Our session has been playing a version of Ships in Full Sail which I believe originated with Sean as well. He has a very nice version of the third part: |:d3 dBG | e3 efg | d3 dBG | A3 ABc | | d3 dBG | e3 efg | dBG {B}AGA | BGG G3 :| I don't know if that's...

Re: Finger Hole Comparison

I agree that in principle you can compress the finger hole layout on a conical-bore flute as compared to a similar flute with a cylindrical bore. However, as I have mentioned before, this difference is sometimes not very much. I think the purpose of making a conical-bore flute is usually better tun...

Then I can try to compare it with actual results from my making of PVC flutes. I'll be interested to see your results, either here or on the flutemaker's list. In my own experiments on PVC flutes I could not reliably get a significant change in tuning from undercutting. On the flutemaker's list it ...

The secret to calculation is to average the tonehole diameter(this is, in fact, a truncated cone). (R1 + R2)/2 = D-avg You're saying this for the contribution of the tonehole column, I presume? It terms of venting, it doesn't seem likely to me that an undercut hole acts as a hole of t...
