Wanxiao, hmmm. Depending upon the characters used, this can mean "a joke", "to play a prank" or "a Grade School, with grades 1-6". Could have other meanings, but that exhausts my modest English-Chinese Dictionary. YMMV.

Re: Norman Rockwell The Love Song, 1926
I believe it has a lot to do with where Rockwell lived. He is on record as saying his studio on South Street, Stockbridge, Massachussetts was his favorite. He grew up on Long Island, and spent part of his adult life there, spending summers with his parents at various New England farmhouses. This is ...

Re: Remarkable Innovation by William Pond
Gentlemen, I believe what you are looking at is the progenitor of the low whistle. Probably some approximation of D. Since it is a Wm Pond instrument it may well be close to modern pitch.

Re: Ebay Items
Is it possible this is a further fall-out to Brian Howard's retirement due to health issues? In any case, it looks like a horde from someone's full on pipe production being closed.

Re: When does a cylinder become a cone?
Turns out, I found a real world example that bears on this question. I have a 19th century flageolet (a true flageolet, with a beak and upper chamber for a bit of sponge for moisture absorption) set in very close to modern key of D.) which fingers much like a concert D chanter (barring the closure o...

Re: Symptoms of Blackwood allergy?
I use these on my cocus, and my Blackwood flutes. Flute Lip Plate Shields. I get mine from Sweetwater, but they're available on Amazon. Easy to clean and sterilize (in case it is a cold or cold sore virus). Reduces contact with the flute. YMMV.

Re: Left-handed flute player question
In answer to the first part of your post: Hammy on his blog speaks about trying to mirror his embouchure for lefties. The older generation saw lefties with some effort adapting to R&R and other older flutes to good effect. Tansey is notable here. As a 'natural lefty' I have had to live my life a...

Re: Headless Flute
I am saddened to hear that Lars has passed. My home is somewhat remote from his shop in Covington, so it is apparent I haven't been by there for a while. I'll try to get in touch with Sam, his technician/apprentice to inquire what has become of his collection of old instruments. Lars was an outstand...

Re: Headless Flute
For the missing low C key here is another possibility. Lars Kirmser, https://www.musictrader.com/meet-the-team , has a sizable collection of early wooden flutes, and specifically offers repair/replacement of olde keywork.

Congratulations! You just bought a fifty-dollar Porsche. Enjoy!
I don't think there are any CITES restrictions on Cocus. (I could be wrong, so check it out.) This is, of course, a certifiable Antique, so. . .

Re: Headless Flute
A good steel measure , a bright light, and a good magnifying glass will be your best guides when you can go hands-on with this instrument. This is not a Nach-Meyer! Anyone who can make you a replacement head can also give you a forgiving and useful embouchure cut. I would very much like to get Terry...

Your first 'port-of-call' should be here: http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/flutelengths.htm This is a discussion of 'flute-sounding length'. You are in luck insofar as having the ability to measure the length from the C# hole (first hole, left hand section) to the Eb hole at the foot. This will be the as...
