Rayburn and Chieftain compared? (looking for a low G)

I'm in the market for a low G, and am very happy with the Chieftain low F I've got, but am thinking about something else as well to have some variety in tone/feel/etc. Any comparisons in terms of tone/volume between the lower whistles (not just G) with Rayburn and the Chieftain? Any other brands to ...

Re: How do Chieftain, Overton and MK compare? (clogging/tone)

... if someone says "my X whistle never clogs" and someone else says "my X whistle always clogs" we might well see if the two people live in the same climate, or not. I think that helps explain a lot. I don't play pipes, but I do know that I'm a wet blower -- from trumpet to sax...

Re: Anyone else using a Moleskine music notebook?

I just got one. I've used the same size lined to write down tune names, and it is small and rugged. I got the music notation one so I can write down the first line of a tune , or more if needed. Most of the music I use is printed out and in binders or photo copied from books too, and that is great f...

Re: New teak case for MK low D photos

Agreed. A stack of cases at a gig would be a real pain. For just one or two it would be fine, but I can't imagine the hassle with a whole set!

Re: How do Chieftain, Overton and MK compare? (clogging/tone)

Thanks Parkwood -- my thinking aloud was just that, and you've answered a lot of what I'm trying to understand. Byll, saying "The term 'hard to play' is not a preference , it is a veiled condemnation" is not accurate at all, nor is it a fair characterization of what I wrote in my second po...

Re: New teak case for MK low D photos

I like to keep my whistles together as well, but the low D's are pretty long. That's the issue I was thinking about since I need to carry it in a messenger bag sometimes; and since I don't want the brass tuning slide to get bent, the idea of a wooden case similar to that for a flute. The idea of a m...

Re: How do Chieftain, Overton and MK compare? (clogging/tone)

Thanks Byll and Colin! (This is why C&F is such a great board...) Sorry if my post wasn't as well worded as it could have been, and I wasn't serious that it IS "flawed" but wondering aloud. (Once again, the emotional flatness of writing online leads to misunderstanding...) Let me rephr...

Re: How do Chieftain, Overton and MK compare? (clogging/tone)

I got my Chieftain low F a couple of days ago, and it plays really well. It plays more like the MK I have then the Overton. I'm still on the waiting list for the MK F, so we'll see when that comes in which one I keep. This has led to some heretical musings... [DISCLAIMER ADDED LATER: The following a...

Thanks for the link Feadoggie -- that is the latch I've been looking for, but couldn't remember which site I saw it on.

Re: New teak case for MK low D photos

Good suggestions all. We're certainly going to make some changes--the hinges/latches need to be moved, and I agree about rounding the corners. I did that for a small mountain dulcimer case (a soprano dulcimer) and it worked out very well. The woodwork is a combination of glue and some brads for stre...

New teak case for MK low D photos

Just got this today from a friend, Khun Noom. We're going to redo the latches in brass maybe, if I can find a good place to get them (any ideas for mail order in the States?). We're also talking about moving them out a bit from the center. The case is teak, and the whistle is an MK low D. I was thin...

Re: Comparisons among the Dixon D's (Trad, Polymer, Brass)??

... I should warn you that I'm much more into playing mountain dulcimers now than whistles, so take my advice with caution. :) No kidding! I've played dulcimer since I was little (being a Ritchie with roots in eastern Kentucky and Jean as a cousin sort of made that inevitable). I play in an Irish/F...

Re: Comparisons among the Dixon D's (Trad, Polymer, Brass)

Those 3 Dixon whistles have some differences in sound. Which you would like better is a personal decision. I've owned all three ... still have the Trad and the tunable polymer with the brass tuning slide. The brass was too heavy, felt unbalanced, and took forever to warm up. Didn't even try to sell...

How do Chieftain, Overton and MK compare? (clogging/tone)

I've search Chiff & Fipple and looked around some on other sites, but wanted to post some specific questions here. I'm in the market for a low F tunable whistle. I'm on the waiting list for an MK, but that's going to be into the fall sometime (October maybe) before that is going to be ready. The...
