if you are that new you need to do alot more research, including sitting with the archives of this board for a few hours. to help you at all we need to know where you are, what else you play, if you will have a teacher, how much you can spend, how long you are willing to wait.. this is all important...

i second the jerry freeman tweak. here's a novel idea. why not buy it from jerry directly? he posts here every day, you can pm him. which one? i don't suggest the sweetone cause its so playable as it is, but it is his least expensive. i love my tweaked shaw, just received, but that will set you back...

i have a john sindt suprano C on order- that will be about a year i think.
otherwise i am good. i keep wanting a burke D, but that will have to wait. i don't love suprano Ds enough to justify the outlay at this point. (though people are telling me that the burke D may change my mind on that)

just got mine from jerry. well, didn't just get it, but just got around to playihg it. i never had an untweaked shaw, so my basis of comparison has to be the closest thing i know- the clarke traditional. i love the sound. even tweaked, at first glance, it "uses alot of air". but after expe...

you know, i recently acquired a low G. i noticed exactly the same thing. it spontateously disappeared with practice. overtons are great but they require a little more in terms of mouth shape and air consistancy. however, if there is any question, send it back to colin he his happy to check any whist...

i heard jerry o'sullivan say in a class at north hero that no well made chanter by contemporary makers will be damaged by tape. you can clean it with alcohol, just one example.

this question comes up every year. and every year i suggest "Pipe Friendly Tunes" by John Walsh. they are very whistle friendly. there are more than 550 of them. they are organized by name and type. when there is more than one name to a tune, the index recognizes all names. when there are ...

again, from one beginner to another: if you are on that tune, the video thinks you have already mastered the first octave scale and the previous 2 tunes. the video maker also expected that it would be MONTHS before you got to that tune. in terms of a beginner, maggie in the woods is not so easy. you...

jim, if you are playing the "maggie in the woods" i think you are playing, you are doing very well indeed. You are able to get a solid low D after G, and you are hitting high G regularly. in the second part you are hitting high G either "cold" or gracing on high F first. you are ...

my opinion- loose the thumb rests. try without. if you have trouble, then go back to them. the best whistes are made without them. you do not want to need a crutch if you do not have to. i greatly admire your service to your country. if you are ever planning to be down in LA, give me a ring- i am th...

to continue to answer james...

sorry, did not answer all your questions. the back d will sharpen if you push the reed further in, as will all the notes, particularly the left hand. if they sharpen too much, once you are advanced and know how to close the chanter, thats where taping comes in. but i am not at that level, and may no...

james, i am so glad you mention that. i have struggled with that for months. i now understand the issue. at least in my case. i am only slowly learning to feel the holes. that is part of learning the pipes. some sets are easier than others. if you learn to handle a difficult set, you will be able to...
