you're right - it's so obvious that I'm going to spend the next hour standing facing the corner.

Am I missing something, or is there something odd about the photographs ?
The end mount of the regulator in the original photo provided by Thies shows ivory with a tuning pin - now look at the second last photo provided by Joseph - brass, no tuning pin, where's the ivory and pin gone?

Bear in mind that drivers in Ireland don't actually see cyclists. It's a genetic thing, just like haemochromatosis.

exactly as Peter said. last time I saw Seamus Ennis play was probably 1976 or '77, Slattery's in Capel Street, his set squeaked, squealed, drones wandered a bit, missed notes, but absolute magic - I had never heard such a quiet audience while someone was playing in Slattery's before. A lot of today'...

if your'e just starting into the drones, try putting a little piece of blu-tack or similar into the bass to silence it and just use tenor and baritone at first, to quieten them, try plastic drinking straws, or thick nylon (not wrapped) guitar strings. With the straws, slit them lenghtways first. Wit...

when you look at the variety of earlier sets, from 18th century on through the 19th and early 20th, sets with 4 drones & 2regs, 3 drones & 1 reg, 3 drones & 4 regs etc., maybe the question should be 'how authentic are sets with 3 drones & 3 regs' ?

what do people like Liam O'Flynn and Paddy Moloney do with their Rowsome sets, which I am assuming have ivory fittings, when they travel the world?

With all due respects, Bill, 'Union pipes' as a description is unknown outside a narrow band (pathetic pun NOT intended) of people who have an academic interest in terminology, and any revival is limited strictly to that narrow band. The attempts at redefining the terminology smacks dangerously of r...

The reality is that if you used the description "Union Pipes" to the vast majority of people in Ireland - both players and those familiar with the instrument - they would look blankly at you. The vernacular is 'the pipes' or 'concert set/pipes/pitch' or 'flat set/pipes/pitch' and everbody ...

http://www.freeimagehosting.info/uploads/f550e418bd.jpg having been suitably, and very politely put in my place, this might lead to a photo of my drones by Peter Maguire, might even display it here, I have no idea what might happen. Not much to be seen really in any event. I mentioned Peter to a fr...
