IMO, it's never too soon to start playing the flute if that's what you want to play. The basic fingering transfers from the whistle, but so much else doesn't. You can certainly get tinnitus from the whistle. The flute is an octave lower, so -less- dangerous, but if you play for decades, you are like...

I only read comic books... in Japanese. I used to read quite a lot. For a time I was reading several books a day, almost all fantasy/science fiction. Then I realized that it would take -much- longer to read a page in a foreign language... ;) All the money I've saved on not buying books! (Well, okay,...

But as the parent of two teens, I see absolutely nothing wrong with this site, or with the rules this teacher wants in her classes, as long as the school administration and school board back her up. I don't think the rules are for a specific class, I think they're rules for the whole school, at all...

Mmmm, hummus. I don't like most of the flavored hummus, except the garlic flavored. Garlic is, of course, an ingredient in hummus, and the store hummus usually doesn't use enough, but the 'garlic flavor' is usually just right. Mostly, though, I make it at home. It only takes a few minutes, and taste...

Re: Echinacea's (non) effect on colds

A paper published in today's New England Journal of Medicine concludes that taking echinacea appears to be ineffective in preventing the common cold. Interesting, but not conclusive. I always take an -infusion- (Aka, 'tea') of echinacea. Often echinacea purpurea, which is supposed to be less effect...

For the suspicious minded, I checked the urban legends archives, and found that, ICE is a real emergency workers campaign. ICE is not in response to any particular recent disaster. ICE numbers are -not- a gateway for viruses. (Well, of course not, why would they be any more than any other number? Bu...

Chris A, until you walk in Gonzo's shoes you really can't judge him. Besides he said he didn't do it. ... Do you live in a city that has a lot of these animals? Whether he did such a thing or not, he sincerely advocated it as a solution, and presumably would have done it if other avenues had not be...

I presume that Blackwood, ChrisA and everyone who's so shocked at Gonzo's "suggestion" is vegetarian, right? Living, breathing, feeling creatures, and all that? :) You sir, are a vile and disgusting individual with whom I am ashamed to be sharing this board. ... like the scum that you tru...

so are these laws talking about American Stratfordshire Terriers or just what? According to the article that launched this thread, they are talking about any dog that -looks like- a pit bull, regardless of temperment. Regarding gonzo's protestations, you are supporting the slaughter of hundreds of ...

Re: Question

Being abslolutly the best whistler there is :P  , I have never really tried the flute or the fife, and I was just wondering what is the difference between the two? The fife is typically a Bb instrument, played in the second and third octaves of its range (the first and second overblown notes)...

As for the dog next door, it just died one day. Trouble with the neighbor's dog? Take a big old sponge and cut it into nice big chunks, then soak it in beef or chicken broth. Squeeze it down until it's small, and wrap rubber bands tightly around it around it and let it sit until it dries hard. Then...

What was that about light not having mass? When light is a particle, it is a massless particle (which some might argue isn't -really- a particle at all, but such are the quandries of quantam physics...) I can't remember the correct formulation of relativity off the top of my head, but it worked out...

Re: keeping in time

Or any other ideas? There are several listening tutors out there, notably L.E. McCullough's 121 Favorite Irish session tunes and the MadForTrad CDs. If you got one of these, and learned to play a few of each tune type in unison with the CD, you'd have little trouble with the rhythm for future tunes...

I thought Windows recorder was limited to 60 second clips? But that was back on Windows98. Maybe they've removed the brain-damage since.
