Re: Irish Flute: The Luddite's Perspective
In the absence of a teacher, a student who practices quite a bit AND has written resources that point them in directions for their personal research is better off than one that has nothing but a flute and some Youtube videos. I encourage those kind enough to share technical data and informed opinion...

Re: A radical view ... turn the embouchure OUT ...
I was going to "report back" in the other thread about getting a reedy dark tone. I have been playing my flute with the embouchure hole in line with the tone holes all straight. I decided to turn it (per Terry's Nicholsen excerpts) 1/4 a way in so the edge of the embouchure hole was on the...

Re: Getting the hard, dark, tone
I read Terry's article and am looking forward to trying it tonight. When I played the Forbes (Pratten), I had the embouchure turned in close to a 1/4 and it helped a great deal. When I got the Reviol (Rudall), I posted that I was having a problem getting a good tone at first. Someone suggested rotat...

Re: Do you know anything about this old, wooden 6 key flute?
Is it a flute or a snake? I wonder if it was kept in a higher humidity environment for a while to straighten out and then well oiled and broken back in if it would be viable.

Re: Flute Method
You can search the forum on the subject of Grey's book and find differing opinions. It is a great book and he took his time explaining the intricacies of different aspects of the methods (breathing, tone, rolls, articulations). The only area I can remember to be aware of is that of his fingering cho...

The long and short (o)f it.
I'm branching out to different key signatures and playing music with more accidentals now. Guess I've got to use those keys :-). I learned a piece using the long F and then tried it with the short and I found certain passages were easier. Is there any conventional wisdom as to when to use the long o...

Got this a week or so ago for a friend in Ohio that was going to take up the flute. He changed his mind after realizing how much practice is necessary to perfect the embouchure and didn't want to take that time from his main instrument. When it first arrived, I didn't like the sound at all. After oi...

FS: Gill Soprano (Maple?)
I think it's maple...possibly stained? I have had it for about 15 years and used to play it a lot but it's been untouched for a while. Time for it to find a new home and get played again.

128 strings between us. The key was to not play over each other too much. I think we did ok apart from the bum note every so often and 2 weeks to arrange and practice it. First song is harp solo and second is the ensemble. This was my first on stage in front of an audience at a concert performance. ...

Re: Trinity College vs. Celtic-Star
Really? The CS I played has a standard steel-string guitar type of headstock with the usual right angle tuners found on most modern mandolins. Waidaminnit. Is it the Firefly model down at the bottom of the page I was looking at? I believe so. Sorry...I coulda sworn I was looking at a slot head. My ...
